This league originated at the start of the 1995-96 season and it was organized by Tampa
Hall of Fame bowler Jim Caldwell. It has been a handicap league and a scratch league at different times and bowls at Brandon Crossroads Bowl on Friday mornings. Currently a sanctioned handicap league consisting of three man teams, the league starts practice at 9:45 AM and starts bowling at 10:00 AM. It is open to male bowlers who are at least 50 years old.
For the past ten years the Secretary/Treasurer has been Leonard Hartley and those interested in bowling in this league can contact him at (813) 689-2985. This past winter
season 06-07, the league consisted of thirteen teams and the center can provide several additional lanes should the league continue to grow. Indications from the current summer league are
that the winter league will have more teams this upcoming season. The league has picked up several new bowlers. If you are looking for a highly competitive league with a “relaxed” atmosphere come join
the league. While bowlers complain of their aches and pains (especially during practice) there is a lot of friendly bantering going on all during league play…you might say that everyone can relate with each other regarding the “aging process.” Nevertheless once competition starts, the bowling gets very competitive. Unlike some other leagues, bowlers in this league are encouraged
by their fellow bowlers when stringing strikes (even though it’s against you).
Some of the stats from this past season reflect how competitive the league is. High average in the league was
Otto Strickland (215) followed by Kurt Heubusch (213), Nick Blasioli (211), Bill Knisley (208) and Jim Flint (203). Four other bowlers averaged 200-203. Some of the high scratch series in the league this past winter were Nate Butler (795 two weeks before the league ended), Otto Strickland (790), Ron Tucker (773) and Kurt Heubusch (758). Bowlers firing 300 games were Gordon Mills, David Hall and Nate Butler. Nate, behind his 300, immediately bowled a 298 and for awhile appeared to be on his way to break some kind of city or state record. Other high games were Bill White (299), Virgil Wills, Richard Campbell, Nick Blasioli, Ron Tucker and Kurt Heubusch (279’s). Already this summer Jim Flint has fired a 300/802.
